Once a new aluminium slider is in, the old white windows next to it can look tired. Plenty of Uckfield homeowners do the rear windows at the same time so the frame colour and sightlines match, and some go on to do the whole house.
Slimline casements
Narrow aluminium frames with side-hung or top-hung opening sashes. They hold more glass than a uPVC window of the same size and the colour is baked on, so there is nothing to paint. Anthracite grey is the common choice to match a slider; black, white and dual colour are all possible.
Flush casements
The opening sash sits flush with the outer frame instead of lapping over it. It looks closer to a traditional timber casement, which some people prefer on an older cottage in one of the villages.
Tilt-and-turn
Useful on upstairs rooms in a newer house: tip the top in for air, or swing the whole sash in to clean the outside from indoors.
What about timber?
Timber windows are available, and in a listed building they may be what the council expects. Elsewhere, a timber flush casement costs roughly twice as much as a uPVC flush casement, and painted timber wants its first fresh coat roughly three years after fitting, with further coats at regular intervals from then on. The installer does not do that painting, so it falls to you as the owner. On a post-war Uckfield house, aluminium or uPVC is usually the practical answer.
Doing the whole house
Windows priced as a whole-house set work out cheaper per window than one or two on their own, because the survey, delivery and fitting team are shared. See the Nutley example below.
Illustrative example of a typical job
Slider, aluminium front door and six windows, detached house in Nutley
The house: A detached house near the southern edge of Ashdown Forest in Nutley, being refitted in one go before the owners move in.
The spec: A two-pane aluminium slider at the back, an aluminium entrance door at the front, and six slimline aluminium casements throughout, all in one colour.
Typically £17,050 to £31,750, supplied and fitted, including VAT.
One survey, one order and one fitting team for the whole house. The windows are priced as a whole-house set, which brings the per-window figure down.
